Steeped in the tradition of the parish choir, the Salvation Army brass band and the football supporter’s fanfare, this patriotic Combo has become a sort of national orchestra for a country in the process of extinction. It is fresh, a tad old-fashioned, inventive and funny. The title music of a Flemish radio programme lies alongside a theme by Thelonius Monk. “La Cumparsita” and “Puttin’ on the Ritz” join hands and dance alongside tunes by Michel De Rudder and Daniel Stokart. Like their ‘fin-de-siècle’ mambo, the album as a whole expresses the joy of playing.
