Stefan Lievestro, born in Apeldoorn in 1964, got his first piano lessons at eight years old.
At high school the focus of his attention got drawn to electric bass. At age 18 contrabass became his main instrument and he got admitted at the Conservatory if Arnhem (currently called ArtEZ).
In 1989 he graduated cum laude at the Conservatory of Hilversum (currently Conservatory of Amsterdam, after merging with the Sweelinck Conservatorium).

In 1990 he got a scholarschip to study in New York with Marc Johnson.
In 1991 Stefan won the first prize at the Karlovy Vary Jazz Festival (Czech Rep.)
In 2005 Stefan Lievestro won the Deloitte Jazz Award in the Bimhuis in Amsterdam.
Besides participating in numerous recordings with (mainly) Dutch and Belgian musicians, Stefan has plaid with a number of international stars, amongst whom: Nat Adderley, Bob Berg, Deedee Bridgewater, Philip Catherine, Freddie Hubbard, Pat Metheny, Art Porter… Stefan is still playing on a frequent basis with Dee Dee Bridgewater when she tours Europe.
At present Stefan has his own (recording and performing) bands – ‘Lievestro6’, with Guilermo Celano, Harmen Fraanje, Jasper Blom, Mete Erker and Mark Schilders; ‘Lievestroʼs Mona Lisa Overdrive’, met Arno Krijger, Hans van Oosterhout, Reinier Baas and Jasper Blom – and is part of the Marzio Scholten Band.
Stefan is founder of Mainland Records, an independent jazz record label, on which he releases his own cdʼs as well as others (www.mainlandmusic.nl).
In September 2007 Stefan was programmer of the Jazz International Festival in Rotterdam.
Stefan teaches at the conservatoria of Gent (Hogeschool Gent – contrabass and bass guitar) and Rotterdam (Codarts – contrabass).
