Purbayan is one of those musicians which can play any music. His instrumental technique knows no limit, and his musical understanding is as deep as it remains open.

He lives in India, in Kolkata, but this still young musician has a real international career since many years, and performs all around the world. He’s one of the very few musicians of his génération to record CD’s of classical ragas which are known all across India. He also records projects where he allows himself to push the borders of classical music, and explore new structures and new instrumental combinations.

Purbayan has learned Sitar from his father parthapratim Chatterjee –disciple od Pt Nikhil Banerjee and Ustad Alo Akbar Khan. Purbayan’s music combines the tone and richness of the Nikhil Banerjee style and a contemporary touch of his own urban sensitivity.

Purbayan’s music has been appreciated by jazz artists Chick Corea, Béla Fleck, and Pat Metheny,. He has performed several times with tabla artist Ustad Zakir Hussain.
