Born in 1978, Sam Gertsmans comes from a musical family. He began playing violin at the age of 6. Later at the music academy, he studied violin, trumpet, chamber music, instrumental groups and the history of music. He left at the age of 17 with a medal in violin and another one in chamber music, instrumental group and the history of music. He then picked up an electric bass. In 1998, he registered at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he earned a 1st prize in electric bass (in June 2001). He then signed up again but for the double bass (taught by Jean-Louis Rassinfosse).

Since then, he has played in several bands with musicians such as: Steve Houben, Jacques Pirotton, Ivan Paduart, Felix Simtaine, Michel Herr, Bert Joris, Greg Houben, Pascal Mohy and Quentin Liégeois.
