BIG NOISE are a Belgian quartet with a passion for the New Orleans sound of the twenties. Three of the musicians – although from very different musical backgrounds – met at the Brussels Conservatory. Max Malkomes is an early blues buff; Rahaël D’Agostino brings the immediately identifiable sounds of brass and marching bands; while the incredible swing of Laurent Vigneron provides the motor for the group. Along the way, they picked up pianist Johan Dupont whose background is more in classical music (even though he also plays trumpet, accordion, drums and tuba).
They play music that is popular, accessible to everyone and inevitably sparks broad smiles and hip-swinging at every concert. The dancefloors, cafés and clubs that they learnt their skills in rarely resist the groove.
The Big Noise Quartet arranges the tunes to ensure the gigs have different vibes, with some 20s jazz, the heritage of Louis Armstrong, Baby Dodds, Jelly Roll Morton and styles such as gospel, swing and blues. Each concert is a giddy trip at breakneck speed through the styles.
