In fact, this album seems to explore the very relationship between composition and improvisation; between the composer and the “interpreter”. In classical music, if one examines the role of the composer with that of the interpreter, there is a little ambiguity. Both are essential, but the interpretation remains subordinate to the composition. In this particular collaboration, each pianist has chosen a composition which has become, in essence, his own. Inspired by, but at the same time independent of the original composition, each pianist has succeeded in producing virtually a new piece.
